CinemaCon 2021 Brings More Details of Jurassic World Dominion

CinemaCon 2021 is currently taking place in Las Vegas, and whilst the footage being shown isn’t online, we have been given some new details of footage from Jurassic World Dominion courtesy of Germain Lussier at Gizmodo.

Germain’s article has a great breakdown of the footage as it unfolded in the trailer which was shown to insiders – so we don’t want to copy that here. Go and read the article for those details. Here, we’re going to speculate on some of the interesting details and also talk about some of the best scenes described from this trailer. Be warned – mild spoilers ahead.

Let’s start with the description of a pair of Brachiosaurus being led by vehicles in a snow-covered quarry. Visually, this sounds a lot like the game trail sequence which we see in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, echoing some of the sequences which we see as the animals behave more naturally in their environment on Sorna. Whilst we know that the animals are going to be adapting to a new world in Jurassic World Dominion, the context of the vehicles here provides a particular question. In recent Jurassic World Evolution 2 footage we’ve seen a renewed focus on the US Department of Fish and Wildlife – so we’re willing to bet that the sequence described here is featuring the department as they attempt to grapple with dealing with Dinosaurs in the world. We’re excited to see how these sequences unfold – and, crucially, the role that Owen and Claire will play in supporting attempts at containment.

The more exciting news comes in the form of the confirmation of Ellie, Alan and Ian being prevalent in the trailer – echoing the fact that the original trio are going to be a big focus in the upcoming sequel. There is a description for a scene of Ellie in a cage with water pouring in – almost emulating the water sequences present in Jurassic Park III. We’re really excited to see the context here, and whether the Mosasaurus or another aquatic threat may potentially be putting her in even more danger than just the water alone. A big note to take away is also the return of the Dilophosaurus – something which fans have been clamouring for since it first appeared in 1993’s Jurassic Park. We’re very excited to see how the dinosaur makes its return in the sequel. Is this the InGen dinosaur we’ve all come to know and love? Or is it a brand-new BioSyn variant? Only time will tell.

Germain also goes on to describe a lot of sequences which seem to have been filmed in Malta (as we broke in October of 2019), and the parallels which are made to Indiana Jones are particularly prevalent here. This sounds like a really interesting sequence in its own right – with the inclusion of an old tomb particularly interesting to us. Perhaps there is a secret laboratory or facility hidden underneath the tomb? We have certainly seen more extravagant locations in other films which Dominion seems to be taking inspiration from, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this is the case. Alternatively, it may just be that a chase sequence leads the characters into Malta’s underworld – providing a great opportunity to showcase the historical heritage of the location on the big screen whilst things unfold on screen. A big note here is the mention of Velociraptors pursuing Claire. Whilst this could be Blue, we’re willing to bet our money on the fact that these are a different kind of theropod.

Overall, Jurassic World Dominion sounds set to be the globe-trotting adventure which Colin Trevorrow promised to fans when he first endeavoured to make this project. We are incredibly excited to see how the story and narrative of this film builds on previous entries in the saga, and also cannot wait to see the different scenarios and situations which the film explores as it attempts to answer if we would be safe if dinosaurs were among us.

Huge thanks to Germain for the coverage. Make sure to read his full breakdown here.
